Kin-Code is a terminal-based AI coding assistant written entirely in Go, born from the chaos of Anthropic's accidental Claude Code source code leak on March 31, 2026. The project is a ground-up reimplementation that ships as a single 9MB binary with zero runtime dependencies — no Node.js, no Python, no package manager required. The tool supports multiple provider backends (Anthropic, OpenAI, Ollama), making it fully functional with local models. It packs ten built-in tools including bash execution, file operations, web search, and memory management. Unique features like "Soul files" let you define persistent AI personas per project, while a sub-agent system enables parallel task execution. Context auto-compression and extended thinking mode are also included out of the box. Where Kin-Code earns its place is on constrained environments: servers, CI runners, or dev containers where a 250MB Node runtime isn't welcome.
