Released April 21, 2026, it ships to all ChatGPT, Codex, and API users — with a Thinking mode (web search during generation, batch up to 8 images, self-verification) reserved for Plus ($20/mo) and above. The headline improvement is text rendering: gpt-image-2 achieves approximately 99% character accuracy in generated images, compared to the scribbled gibberish that plagued earlier models.
