The moment of truth is whether the MCP server actually integrates without ceremony; if I can point my MCP client at it and get durable memory in under 15 minutes, this earns its place. The weekend alternative exists but it's not trivial: you'd need LangGraph or a custom state machine plus a vector store plus a serialization layer — call it a week, not a weekend. What earns the ship is that MemGPT's underlying memory architecture is actually published research, not marketing copy, and the hosted version removes the single biggest adoption blocker which was infrastructure ownership.”
