Anthropic is flipping a significant default in Claude Code: auto mode, which previously had to be manually enabled, will now be on out of the box. The practical effect is fewer interruptions asking users to confirm actions mid-session — Claude will make more decisions and execute more steps without pausing for human sign-off.

The change reflects a broader industry push toward agentic coding tools that operate with minimal friction. Requiring constant confirmation prompts has been one of the more common complaints from developers using AI coding assistants at scale — it breaks flow and partially negates the time savings. By making auto mode the default, Anthropic is betting that most users want more autonomy from their AI pair programmer, not less.
