Canva Remakes Itself as an Agentic System at Create LA — Adobe Should Be Worried

At its Create LA event on April 16, Canva unveiled AI 2.0 — a full platform reimagining built around conversational design, brand intelligence, agentic workflows, and deep integrations with Gmail, Slack, and Zoom. With 265 million users, the launch signals a direct challenge to Adobe's creative suite and a structural shift in who designs professionally.

Canva's Create LA event on April 16 was less a product launch and more a rebranding of the entire company's identity. CEO Melanie Perkins opened with a simple claim: "Canva is no longer a design tool. It's a design system that works for you." That framing — agentic, proactive, always-on — describes nearly every product announced.

**What shipped:** Conversational Design lets users describe a campaign in plain language and get a fully editable, brand-consistent result. Brand Intelligence ingests your brand kit — fonts, colors, logo variants, tone guidelines — and enforces it automatically on every output, not just templates. Canva Sheets AI generates designed outputs from spreadsheet data. Canva Code 2.0 now imports HTML, making it a lightweight web builder for teams that live in Canva. Persistent memory across sessions. Deep integrations with Gmail, Slack, and Zoom.

**Why this matters for Adobe:** Canva has been eating Adobe Express's market share since 2019. AI 2.0 accelerates that trend by collapsing the expertise barrier further — a non-designer with Brand Intelligence access can now produce on-brand materials that would have required a trained designer two years ago. Adobe's moat has always been the professional skill required to use its tools; Canva is systematically eroding that moat.

**The scale factor:** With 265 million registered users, Canva AI 2.0 is not a niche launch. This is the largest single deployment of AI-native creative tooling ever shipped. Even capturing 20% of those users as active AI feature users would represent 53 million people regularly using agentic design workflows — a number that dwarfs the user bases of every dedicated AI design tool combined.

**Skeptic view:** Canva has a history of impressive demos followed by uneven rollouts. The AI 2.0 features are impressive in controlled demos, but enforcement of brand standards at the diversity of brand kits Canva hosts will be an extremely hard problem at scale. Expect version 2.1 to contain significant reliability patches.

Developer Perspective

Canva Code 2.0 with HTML import is the feature that brings me back to Canva after years away. If I can roundtrip from my design system to Canva's layout tools and back without losing tokens, it solves a real production workflow problem.

Reality Check

Every major SaaS company is announcing 'agentic redesign' this month. Most of them mean: we added an AI chatbot to the sidebar. Wait 90 days to see which Canva AI 2.0 features are actually in the product and which were demo theater at a keynote.

Big Picture

Canva AI 2.0 at 265 million users is the moment AI-native design crosses the chasm into mainstream adoption. The question is no longer whether non-designers use AI tools — they already do — but whether professional designers adapt their value proposition fast enough to stay relevant.
